Consideraciones en torno al problema de las unidades de la selección: de Darwin a Bunge y Kitcher

El problema de las unidades de selección es central en la teoría de la evolución. Tradicionalmente, se ha asumido que la selección actúa sobre organismos individuales; esta fue la postura defendida por Charles Darwin y sus seguidores más inmediatos. Sin embargo, se han propuesto otras interpretaciones, incluyendo la selección de grupos y la selección génica. Filósofos como Mario Bunge y Martin Mahner han desarrollado enfoques materialistas y sistémicos que cuestionan la concepción clásica. La teoría de la selección multinivel ha emergido como una alternativa que permite compatibilizar distintos niveles de selección. Aunque el darwinismo ortodoxo enfatiza la selección individual, algunos casos, como el altruismo biológico, sugieren la posibilidad de selección grupal. No obstante, determinar en qué nivel actúa la selección sigue siendo un problema empírico que debe ser resuelto por la biología. Este artículo defiende una postura pluralista, pero no instrumentalista, sobre la selección natural, enfatizando la importancia de integrar los hallazgos científicos con el análisis filosófico.
